Student Government is an Integral Part of the Positive Culture at MHS

Student Government

At Middlesboro High, Student Government plays an important role in the culture of the school.  Over the past four years, the SG has worked to improve communications with the public and to educate and reward fellow students for positive behavior that is conducive to success in school and life.  Our student of the month program recognizes students from each grade level for demonstrating Yellow Jacket Pride.  Pride is persistence, respect, integrity, determination, and excellence.  We believe these characteristics are imperative to success in all facets of life.

Student Government also hosts reward events for perfect attendance and positive behavior.  At the end of the first nine weeks, over 90% of MHS students earned the right to enjoy an afternoon of watching a movie in the Central Auditorium.  All students in attendance had zero office referrals and / or perfect attendance.

Public service is central to the duties of the officers of the student government.  This year they have conducted special events to improve the lives of their fellow students.  October was bullying awareness month and November was distracted driving prevention month.

The students work to inform the student body by designing posters, conducting meetings, and performing public service announces over the intercom and the school radio station 95.5 WYJR-FM.

This month, Middlesboro Appalachian Regional Hospital CEO Mike Slusher and Vickie Thompson sponsored our Texting and driving prevention education activities.  Student Government Faculty Sponsor Mr. Duke Mayes, the Student Government, and the class officers have many activities planned for the remainder of the school year.
