MMS Hosts District Competition of Governor’s Cup

Middlesboro Middle School hosted the District competition of Governor’s Cup on Saturday, January 19, 2013. Students from MMS advanced to the Regional level in all five content areas (Math, Science, Social Studies, Language Arts, Arts & Humanities), as well as in Written Composition. The Quick Recall Team came in first place, earning them the right to advance to the Regional competition as well. Middlesboro defeated Yellow Creek in their first round of competition, but then were defeated by Bell Central. Middlesboro then defeated Yellow Creek again, leaving MMS to face them in the final round. Middlesboro was able to come back and defeat Bell Central in two consecutive rounds of play to make them the District Quick Recall champs of 2013. They were also the Overall winners of the District Governor’s Cup, accumulating more points than any other team. Coach Sandy Evans stated, “Our kids worked really hard to earn this victory. Because we only had two scrimmage matches before our District competition, our kids didn’t really know what they were up against. We had not competed with either of these teams this year. They were a little nervous in the first match or two, but once they overcame their anxiety, they were able to defeat Bell Central twice and become the Quick Recall Champs! I’m extremely proud of the hard work and dedication our students displayed in this competition!”
