Middlesboro Elementary School hosted a Family Reading Night on Thursday, November 2nd.  Families were treated to s'mores, campfire stories, and reading games.

MHS Radio Station WYJR WYJR

Two years ago Mr. Chuck Owens wrote a grant proposal to establish a radio station at MHS.  Today, station 95.5 WYJR FM-LP is part of everyday life at our school.  Under the guidance of Mr. Owens, a select group of students run the stations day to day play of a variety of music that airs across the city 24 hours a day 7 days a week.  

Middlesboro Middle School Implements LEAD Program

Middlesboro Middle School is currently a Leader in Me (LEAD) school that teaches students how to be well-rounded leaders in their school and community. LEAD is the middle school version of The Leader in Me program developed by Stephen Covey, author of The 7 Habits of Happy Kids and The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens.  Covey developed the student program based on the best selling book, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.

Middlesboro Independent and the Appalachian Renaissance Initiative ARI

The Middlesboro Independent School District is 1 of 17 rural school districts that is included in the Appalachian Renaissance Initiative (ARI). Lead by the Kentucky Valley Education Cooperative (KVEC) and supported by the federal “Race to the Top” grant, ARI is a consortium of 17 regional school districts that have made commitments to share resources and professional learning opportunities.  These 17 districts are collectively working to connect learners to highly effective teachers every day. They focus on five important components of education:  personalized learning environments, next-generation classrooms, accessible data systems, effective teachers and leaders, and college and career readiness. 

Students showcase their Creativity through Destination Imagination

The Destination Imagination program encourages teams of learners to have fun, take risks, focus and frame challenges while incorporating STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics), the arts and service learning. Our participants learn patience, flexibility, persistence, ethics, respect for others and their ideas, and the collaborative problem solving process. Teams may showcase their solutions at a tournament.

Hospital partners with MHS on ‘W8 2 TXT’ campaign

In Kentucky as well as many other states, drivers are prohibited from texting while driving. Middlesboro ARH Hospital recently partnered with Middlesboro High School to raise awareness of the dangers of texting

Career Fair Combines Vision with Reality

"What do you want to be when you grow up?" This is a question children are frequently asked. Sometimes they have a good idea of what to do with their lives, but other times they have not a clue. Middlesboro Elementary School Guidance Counselor Theresa Allen decided to provide an opportunity for kids to see and inquire about jobs with the school's first-ever Career Fair.

MMS Entrepreneurial Fair

Middlesboro Middle School students in Mrs. Evans’ and Mrs. Brigmon’s 4th period classes participated in an Entrepreneurial Fair on November 4th at the middle school.  Several students displayed and presented their own business plans that they created from start to finish.  

Open House Extravaganza

Middlesboro Middle School invites you to join us for our fall Open House Extravaganza on Tuesday, November 10th from 4:30 PM to 6:30 PM.  This will be a Veteran's Appreciation Event.

Teachers Make Presentations at Promising Practices Summit

Seven teachers from the Middlesboro Independent School district presented their Learning Innovation Grant projects at the 2015 Promising Practices Summit in Pikeville, Kentucky on October 28, 2015.   The Summit showcased learning innovation in the eastern Kentucky region as a direct result of the Race to the Top/Appalachian Renaissance Initiative grants that were awarded to Kentucky Valley Educational Cooperative (KVEC) and 17 outstanding rural school districts.

I am very happy to inform parents and students that tutoring has already started here at the middle school. Currently we have early morning tutoring for math with Mrs. Martin on Wednesdays, it begins at 7:15 and goes until 8:00. We may expand

Lady Jackets tie with Claiborne Trinity Hardin regains possession of the ball during Middlesboro’s game against Claiborne on Thursday. The match ended in a 1-1 draw.

A highly competitive game between Middlesboro and Claiborne, Tennessee ended in a 1-1 draw on Thursday. Officials called the game with 5:44 remaining in the second period due to the lack of daylight.

Jackets are victorious on senior night

August Student Leaders of the Month

Petition for Early Enrollment Early Enrollment

A child who is five (5) or who may become five (5) years of age by August 1 may enter primary

school and may advance through the primary program without regard to age in accordance with KRS 158.031


Parents/guardians may petition the Board by May 30th to allow their child to enter Kindergarten earlier

than permitted under statutory age requirements.  On receipt of a petition, the District shall conduct an evaluation process to help determine a student’s readiness to engage in and benefit from early entry to school.

The Summer Feed and Read Program has made a big splash in the community. Tina Schnieder and Shannon Barnard, two of the people who spearheaded the program at the Middlesboro Elementary School, couldn’t be happier with the results they’ve seen.

Six months of student-centered classroom redesigns, technical project-based learning, on-campus gardening, leadership exchanges, and much more culminated in 150+ presentations on April 27 in Pikeville. More than 1200 people showed up and over 5,000 joined by live stream for the 2nd Annual Action Research Summit. Thousands of social media posts generated by #ARIaction16 and WYMT-TV coverage shared the undeniable story of east Kentucky’s leading innovation in rural education.

New Alumni Site

Middlesboro Independent School System has a new alumni page where alumni/former staff/current staff can register and reconnect with one another. You will find the link to the new alumni page at the top of our website under District. You can also access it by going to http://www.mboro.kyschools.us/alumni.aspx. Please don't forget to register so you can stay connected to your fellow alumni. Once you have registered your account will be verified and approved and then you will be added to your graduation years class. So, head over and sign up. This site is brand new so updates will be rolled periodically as we iron out any bugs that might still be left after internal testing. 

Senior Walk at Middlesboro Elementary











Middlesboro Elementary School started a new school tradition by hosting a "Senior Walk" on Friday, May 22, 2015.  Middlesboro High School Seniors, wearing their graduation caps and gowns, marched down the hallways of the elementary school as the younger students watched enthusiastically.  The elementary school students lined each hallway to greet and honor the graduating seniors. Kindergarten students presented the seniors with "graduation lollipops".  After the walk, the seniors were treated to refreshments in the cafeteria. Yearbooks from previous years were placed at each table so that the seniors could reminisce about their years as Middlesboro Yellow Jackets.

Middlesboro Elementary School embarked on The Leader in Me journey two years ago. We wanted to build our students’ skills and self-confidence to succeed as leaders in the 21stCentury. The Leader in Me was created to teach and develop leadership skills in children. It consists of 7 habits that children follow to become the best leaders they can be.
